Narrative Setting

Renfaire Regicide is an epic story about exposing a killer that has murdered the king at a local renaissance faire. Set in the town of Tall Oaks, OH, the renaissance faire's king has been murdered in a gruesome way that has possibly implicated the wrong suspect according to one cast member. This cast member at the faire, your contact, believes the person accused of the murder did not commit it and that the real killer is still at large. This is where you come in - receiving evidence to sift through as the story progresses and the plot unfolds over all 6 episodes to discover who killed the king.

The Game’s Format

This narrative-driven murder mystery product is a 6-month subscription with each monthly episode self-contained in its respective box with a digital component to view virtual desktop evidence. This story follows Hunt a Killer's proven format of subscription box mysteries in that you've been hired as a private investigator to examine realistic evidence though an immersive experience spanning across print, items, video, digital, audio, and email. Your contact will supply you with what she has gathered, physically and digitally, so you can help bring the killer to justice.

My Role

I was the principal visual designer and illustrator for this story. The story consists of nearly 100 individual design deliverables such as major & minor branding appearances, a website, police documents, full illustrations, digital interfaces, maps, booklets, flyers, brochures, memos, handwritten letters, scraps, blueprints, and even some music. Over many of the documents, the faire's polished branding was prominent as well as a DIY aesthetic to much of the supporting artwork as the evidence has come from various in-world sources. Each piece of print design needed appropriate paper selection for weight and finish for the most immersive impact. In addition, since no entertainment establishment is complete without a website (& map),  I designed one that is focused on a mobile-first layout for in-story guests.

Visual Identity and Digital Evidence

Some of the evidence in this story, such as videos, audio files, and scanned documents or photographs all need a place to be accessed as they could not within a retail box. Through an online portal, this evidence could be accessed to remain immersed within the story. The documents within the retail box are not included here as they provide an element of tactility that is necessary for an immersive gameplay experience. Below you can see a mobile-first website, an identity system for the faire itself, and many graphical interfaces that simulate ubiquitous apps or websites.

Illustrations

Renfaire Regicide required many illustrations for in-world evidence to convey the story. Below you can see a play poster, tarot card, concert poster, brochure, schematics, flyer, and three different town maps.
